KOSRAEAN EARLY READERS MATERIALS

2015

One of the greatest obstacles to literacy in indigenous languages of Micronesia is the absence of suitable reading materials for young children. We are working throughout the region to create exciting early readers for use in ECE centers, early grades of schools, and the home learning environment where parents and caretakers can read to and with their children. This work is being done all over the region with different partners and under auspices of different programs, but the overall goal to dramatically increase the quality and quantity of what is available to the youngest learners in our region remains a constant.

The first books published as part of this effort are six books in Kosraean language. Called Kosraean Early Readers, they were created from materials originally developed by Kosrae State Department of Education. They contain texts described as: PREDICTABLE, DECODABLE, or CONCEPT.

They are designed to build Kosraean language literacy at K5 and grade 1 levels. View collection.

TINY EXPLORERS

A Coloring & Activity Book. 2014.

Learning and fun go hand in hand with iREi’s action-packed and intriguing children’s coloring and activity book. Over 60 educational and exciting activities – such as mazes, puzzles, and coloring pages – fit important cultural and environmental themes in Micronesia and invite youngsters to explore and enjoy them. Their purpose is to bring print-based learning into homes with young children, involve parents in education, and make books fun and relevant at an early age. Made possible by Australian Government aid, each book comes with a complimentary coloring pencil set. Well over a thousand of these activity books have already been distributed free of charge throughout the FSM, including the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk, and, boy, were they a success with the kids! * You may choose to add this item to your iREi bookstore purchase(s) by adding a note in the "Add note to seller" box.

MAPS OF MICRONESIA

Book of Puzzles. 2012

There is finally a locally-made resource to teach island geography to young Micronesians! And what better way is there to understand size and spatial relationships between different islands than to assemble your own maps from jigsaw puzzle pieces? With support of the Australian Government, iREi has created the MAPS OF MICRONESIA  Book of Puzzles. All 2,000 copies produced have been distributed free of charge to children and families throughout the FSM islands.* You may choose to add this item to your iREi bookstore purchase(s) by adding a note in the "Add note to seller" box.

ALPHABET CARDS FOR MICRONESIAN LANGUAGES

2012

iREi has created and published sets of flash cards designed for learning the alphabets and orthography of indigenous languages of Micronesia. The deck for each language contains the full set of vowels and consonants used in the writing of a particular language. The illustrations and vocabulary for the alphabet flashcards match the phonic sound of each letter and represent objects that are familiar and immediately recognizable to island children. These cards became irreplaceable resources in the classrooms in islands throughout Micronesia, as well as an important step toward literacy in the islands’ indigenous languages. View Collection.

The alphabet cards were created in the following languages: Yap, Woleai, Ulithi, Satawal, , Chuuk, Mwoshulok, Paafeng, Patiw, Pohnpei, Sapwauhfik, Kosrae, Kapingamarangi, Pingelap, Mwoakilloa, Nukuoro, Nomwonweite, Marshalls and English.

MY FIRST ISLAND BOOK

This CAP (Concepts About Print) book by IREI teaches the youngest children to associate objects in real life with their representations in print, and learn to appreciate books at an early age.

Custom-made picture books for youngest Micronesians
The first ever created-in-FSM books for toddlers are fruits of earnest collaboration. They were conceived by iREi and PeaceCorps volunteers, illustrated by students from Pohnpei, funded by a grant from the Australian Government, created and published by iREi, and distributed by National Department of Health and Social Affairs. The books are not sold. They are being given as gifts to small children throughout the FSM at the time of their immunization shots. Every child, upon receiving their mandatory vaccine, receives as a present their own, very first island book. The series includes four different picture books, introducing our youngest children to the world around them and the world of books through colorful illustrations of sea life, animals, environment, and local foods found across Micronesia.
