ADVENTURES OF OUR YOUNG SEA STEWARDS

2017

This fun-filled activity book is tailor-made to function as an awareness tool for our island kids, promoting familiarity with several of Pohnpei’s endangered marine species, their habitats and encourage good fishing practices. Amusing illustrations offer relatable context and encourage local language involvement in our current supply of books available to our communities. For example, during instances where a marine species is introduced, there is a character inquiring of the child, “Do you know the local name of this fish? You can ask a parent or teacher to help you spell it,” and providing a colorful space for writing the local name in. Fun facts add charm to this learning tool as well: “When left alone, this crab can live for 60 years! Isn't that neat?!”

Whether you are in Pohnpei or living off-island, dive in and learn useful facts with your child or student with our new book, “Adventures with our young sea stewards!” This book is FREE for all as a downloadable pdf at this link:  http://islands.fm/download/Sea-Stewards.pdf

** This book would not have been made possible if not for the generous consideration and donation of Global Greengrants Fund (GGF). Our sincere thanks to GGF for allowing us to create a tool of awareness for our young children and communities. We hope it will transform from words beyond these pages into positive initiatives by our people.

WATER FOR LIFE POSTER

Our islands are surrounded by seemingly endless water, yet we sometimes struggle to find enough clean fresh water for our most basic needs. Because our islands are relatively small, the quantity of fresh water available to us is decisively limited. Pollution and reduction of water quality further diminishes the water amount we can use to drink, cook, wash, and bathe with. This poster highlights some of the most pressing issues related to securing the quantity and quality of fresh water that we need as individuals and as society.

This poster was created jointly with PREL as part of the Water for Life project, funded by the National Science Foundation. View Poster.

OUTER ISLAND OF POHNPEI FACTSHEETS AND MAPS

2014

Little attention is usually given to the outer islands, but not so with iREi. As part of an effort to boost awareness of atolls in Pohnpei State, and increase opportunities for ecologically and culturally sensitive tourism there, we’ve created handy illustrated reference guides with all the key facts and maps, and also the first ever set of outer island postcards in Micronesia.

ONLY ON CHUUK

2012

Many species of plants and animals are endemic to specific locations -- meaning that they live only there and nowhere else in the world. Each high island in Micronesia has its own set of endemics that deserve special recognition and legal protection. IREI seeks to educate the public about these true natural treasures and generate awareness and appreciation needed for their conservation. We are starting the campaign on the island of Chuuk, with a book designed to introduce school children to their island’s unique residents. The beautifully-illustrated and informative book features birds such as the Chuuk Monarch and the Faichuk White-Eye, as well as all of the islands’ other endemic terrestrial flora and fauna.

CULTURAL AND ECO-TOURISM POSTCARDS

2010

The Regional Tourism Committee (RTC) has recently been mandated by the Micronesian Chief Executives to develop media kits, calendars of events, information packages, and other resources to promote tourism in Micronesia. We recognize that personal recommendations and mailing of postcards to friends and family are effective promotional strategies and integral elements of any successful destination awareness campaign -- and have created a set of 9 attractive quality postcards (with a unique twist!). This year, Pohnpei gets world-class tourism promotion materials from IREI in the form of innovative postcards. Available only at Pohnpei Visitors Bureau (PVB), the postcards are made with a patented, one-of-a-kind sealable clear-plastic pocket. The pocket can hold a letter, photo, small souvenir, or the recently released CD with Pohnpei destination e-guide. View sample.

We stand by to assist other local tourism authorities to promote their islands.

PROTECTED AREAS OF GUAM POSTER

2008-2010

The Chief Executives of Micronesian nations/territories have committed to the Micronesia Challenge, to conserve 30% of coastal and 20% of terrestrial resources by 2020. This goal can be achieved only through close cooperation and dedication of all stakeholders and coordinated action of different authorities. On Guam, for example, there are as many as ten different types of protected areas, managed by various agencies and mandated by diverse legislation. iREi has prepared an informative poster that gives an integrated overview of the island’s wildlife refuges, ecological preserves, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), National Park lands, etc. Once published, it will be a comprehensive portrait of the current state of environmental conservation on Guam and a useful reference on the island’s path to fulfil the goals of Micronesia Challenge.
